Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating

You turn the knob. The pot sits there. Cold. Maybe one burner works and the other three don't, or the coil glows for a minute then quits halfway through dinner. It's 8pm, you just got off the train, and nobody wants takeout again. Here's how we trace an electric cooktop element that won't heat, and what you can safely check first.

What a dead element is actually telling you

An electric element is simple. Power comes in, resistance wire heats up, a control decides how long it stays on. When one burner is dead and the rest work, the problem is almost always local to that burner — the element, its socket, or the switch behind that knob. When several burners die at once, or everything runs weak, we start looking upstream at the power feed. Half-power is a real clue. Most electric ranges run on two 120-volt legs. Lose one leg and elements go lukewarm while the clock and lights stay perfectly normal.

Cause one: the connection at the burner

On coil cooktops, the element plugs into a receptacle under the drip pan. Boil-overs run down there. Salt air near the South Shore and along the coast doesn't help — terminals corrode, pit, and stop making solid contact. A loose or burned socket makes heat at the joint instead of in the pan. You'll sometimes see browned or melted plastic around the terminal block. This is the cheapest failure and often the most common. On smooth-top glass cooktops there's no plug, but the ribbon element has spade connections underneath that suffer the same corrosion and heat damage.

Cause two: the element itself, cause three: the switch

Coil elements fail open. The internal wire breaks and current stops. Sometimes you can see it — a blister, a split, a bright scorch mark on the coil. Radiant elements under glass fail the same way, quietly. Then there's the infinite switch, the part your knob turns. It cycles power on and off to fake a low setting. When contacts inside pit and weld or burn open, you get a burner stuck on high, stuck off, or one that heats only on certain knob positions. Knob position tests tell us a lot before anything comes apart.

Cause four: power and control upstream

If two or more elements went dead the same day, suspect the supply. Check your panel for a tripped double breaker — both halves must be fully reset, off then on. A partially tripped breaker is easy to miss. Older homes here still have fuse blocks or aging range receptacles that heat and loosen over years. On newer cooktops with touch controls, a failed control board or a tripped internal thermal limiter can shut off one zone while the display looks fine. Hard water scale on a spilled pot won't cause this, but crusted spills over a sensor can.

Safe checks for you, and what we do next

Safe: swap a coil element with an identical one from another burner, cooktop cold and unplugged or breaker off. If the fault follows the coil, it's the element. If it stays with the position, it's the socket or switch. Also check the breaker, and confirm the knob actually clicks. Don't remove the glass top, don't probe terminals, don't cut power cord connections. We come in with a meter, read resistance across the element, test switch continuity in each position, verify both 120-volt legs at the terminal block, and check for heat damage at the connections. One burner is dead but the rest work. Is the whole cooktop bad?

Almost never. A single dead burner points to that element, its socket, or its switch. The other burners running proves your power feed and main control are fine. It's usually a contained repair.

Why do my burners heat but only weakly?

Weak heat across several elements usually means you lost one of the two 120-volt legs feeding the range. Check for a tripped double breaker first. If it holds, the supply or terminal block needs testing.

Can I use the cooktop while I wait for service?

If only one burner is dead and there's no smell, smoke, or scorching, the others are generally usable. If you see burned terminals, sparking, or you smell hot plastic, kill the breaker and stop until we look.
