Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across the Northeast
When a Dryer Is Worth Fixing — and When It Isn't
We'll tell you whether your dryer is worth repairing, and we do it before any parts get ordered. Call us. The usual calls are a dryer that runs but leaves clothes damp, or one that hums and won't spin. Then you're standing in the laundry room deciding between a repair bill and a new machine, and nobody wants to spend on something that quits next winter. Here's how we think it through, in plain terms.

Age tells you a lot, but not everything
A dryer is a simple machine: motor, belt, heat source, blower, and some controls. Plenty of them run well past a decade on basic care, so age by itself doesn't settle anything. How it aged matters more. On Long Island, salt air goes after metal. Near the water we find rusted cabinets, corroded terminals, and pitted drum rollers. A ten-year-old dryer in a dry inland basement is a different animal than a ten-year-old dryer sitting in a Long Beach garage. We look at the condition of the whole unit, not the number on the label.
The fault type matters more than the age
Some failures are routine. Belts, rollers, idler pulleys, thermal fuses, door switches, heating elements, and igniters on gas models are common wear parts, and swapping them is normal work. Other faults are heavier. A seized motor along with a scorched control board on an older machine starts stacking up. A split drum, or a cabinet rusted through at the base, is structural, and that's usually where we stop. Rule of thumb: one clear failure on an otherwise sound machine is worth fixing. Three unrelated failures at once means the dryer is telling you something.
Can we still get the part?
Parts availability quietly decides a lot of these calls. Common platforms stay supported for years and the parts move through normal supply channels. Discontinued models, oddball imports, and short-run designs get harder. When a control board is obsolete and nobody rebuilds it, repair isn't really on the table, and we'll say that on the phone if we can so you're not waiting on a visit for bad news. We're independent, so we aren't steering you toward one brand's parts pipeline. We need something that fits and works.
What we actually do during the visit
We start with the symptom you described, then confirm it ourselves. No heat, no tumble, long dry times, loud thumping, shutting off mid-cycle: each one points a different direction. On slow-drying complaints we check the vent run first, because a packed vent acts like a dead heating element and it's a fire risk besides. We inspect the drum, the seals, the bearings, and the electrical connections for corrosion. Then we lay out what's wrong, what it takes to fix, and whether we'd do it if the machine were ours. If replacement is smarter, we say so plainly.
Honest cases where a new dryer wins
Replacement makes sense when the cabinet base is rusted through, when the drum is cracked or badly out of round, when the motor and the board have both failed, or when parts aren't made anymore. Same goes if the machine has already needed several unrelated repairs in a short stretch. And with a stacked or compact unit failing at multiple points, the labor to reach each one adds up in time you'd rather spend elsewhere. We'd rather tell you to buy than take a job that won't hold.
When it is time to book
When a Dryer Is Worth Fixing — and When It Isn't — fast answers
My dryer takes three cycles to dry a load. Is it broken?
Often it's the vent, not the dryer. Lint packs the duct and the hot air can't leave. Clear the lint trap, check that the outside flap opens, and have the full run cleaned. If drying is still slow after that, call us.
Does salt air near the shore really shorten a dryer's life?
It can. Damp, salty air corrodes cabinet metal, terminals, and drum hardware faster than inland conditions do. Machines in unheated garages or basements near the water show rust sooner, and that affects whether a repair holds up.
Can you come after I get home from work?
We schedule with commuter hours in mind and offer evening arrival windows where the route allows. Tell us your train schedule when you call us and we'll find a slot that fits.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us what it's doing
Describe the noise, the leak, or the error code on the panel. Brand and rough age help too. We use that to bring likely parts on the first trip instead of guessing in your kitchen.
- Step 2
Pick a window that works
Plenty of our neighbors leave before sunrise and get home after six. We schedule around trains and traffic, later slots included, so nobody burns a vacation day waiting on a repair van.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
Our technician tests the machine, finds the failed part, and explains what's wrong in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets replaced. Most repairs finish during that same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Salt air is factored inCoastal humidity eats at terminals, brackets, and control boards. We look for corrosion behind the panel, not just the obvious broken part. Cleaned and protected connections help a repair hold up through another damp winter.
- Hard water knowledgeScale clogs dishwasher spray arms, coats heating elements, and stiffens water valves. If your dishes come out gritty or the washer fills slowly, mineral buildup is often behind it. We check for it every time.
- Wide service areaHomeowners across six Northeastern states call us for laundry, kitchen, and cooling work: refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, ranges, and cooktops. One number to call, whichever appliance quit on you.
- Straight talk on old unitsSometimes a repair makes clear sense. Sometimes the machine is worn past the point of value, and we say so. You get an honest read on the condition before you decide to fix or replace.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
- Straight answersIf replacing beats repairing, you hear it from us first.
