What an empty ice bin is actually telling you
An ice maker needs three things: water, cold, and a working harvest cycle. When ice stops, one of those three broke down. Cubes that are hollow or half-size point to weak water flow. No cubes at all, with everything else cold, points to the fill valve, the water line, or the ice maker's own controls. Cubes that formed but never dropped point to the harvest side. If the freezer itself feels soft or the ice cream is soupy, that's a different problem — a cooling issue — and the ice maker is just the first thing you noticed. Cheap causes first: settings, doors, and a frozen fill tube
Start with the free stuff. Check the ice maker's on/off switch or the setting in the door panel — a bumped arm or a kid's finger turns it off. Make sure the wire shutoff arm isn't pinned up by a bag of frozen peas. Look for a stack of food blocking the bin. Then check whether the door is closing fully; a warm freezer never harvests cleanly. Around here, a slow drip at the fill tube freezes into a plug, so you may see a small ice column at the back where water enters. That's a defrost-and-diagnose situation, not a broken part.
Water supply and hard-water scale
Long Island water is hard. Scale builds inside the fill valve and the small fill tube, and flow drops off slowly enough that you never notice until cubes get thin. A clogged or long-overdue water filter does the same thing. Check the saddle valve or shutoff behind the fridge — if someone worked under the sink recently, it may be half closed. Look at the copper or plastic line for kinks where the fridge was pushed back against the wall. If your dispenser water also runs slow or spits, that points upstream at the supply, not at the ice maker itself.
Safe checks a homeowner can do
Stay outside the machine. Do this much: confirm the ice maker is switched on, empty and reseat the bin, verify the shutoff arm moves freely, replace the water filter if it's old, and check that the freezer holds a hard freeze overnight. Unplug the fridge for a few minutes to reset the control, then plug it in and wait 24 hours — a healthy ice maker needs that long to fill a bin. Stop there. Don't pull the ice maker off its bracket, don't chip ice with a knife, and don't take off any rear or interior panels. Wiring and sealed cooling parts are ours to handle.

How long should I wait before deciding it's broken?
Give it a full 24 hours after any reset, filter change, or door adjustment. Most ice makers produce a few batches a day, not a bin an hour. If the bin is still empty the next evening, call us.
Could a new water filter fix this by itself?
Sometimes, yes. A clogged filter starves the fill valve and gives you thin, hollow cubes or none at all. It's a cheap first move. If flow at the dispenser also improved, you found the cause.
